Xiaomi is aiming at South-East Asia as first steps towards International Market

This is why Hugo Barra has been brought to Xiaomi : to expand the Chinese company outside of China.
So far, Xiaomi sells devices in China, Taiwan and Hong-Kong. During an official visit in Taiwan, Lin Bin, President of Xiaomi, and Hugo Barra said they would like to open an office in Singapore "as soon as possible".

Xiaomi Stores Strategy

Lin Bin told the press that the Chinese firm have opened 18 of those stores but he really like the "store" terms. He would rather use "service center" that provide way more than repair and are aimed to be more like Coffee Shop where people can relax, discuss and exchange.

Xiaomi Fans 

But with everything that happening, Xiaomi doesn't forget what build the company in the first place, fans.

"Our strategy is always to do what our fans want and meet what they expect us to do. So when we enter a new country, we want them to have options. So like here in Taiwan, you can buy a phone either directly from us, pay full price, and choose any carrier you’d like to use. Or you can buy it with a subsidy. This is a good choice. Our philosophy for the rest of the world, including Southeast Asia, is exactly the same. In some countries, carriers act like they do in Taiwan. They’re in the business of selling phones and offering subsidies. In other countries they’re not. So our strategy will vary a little bit from country to country."

To prove their point, Hugo Barra gave the taiwanese audience a nice show which was the highlight of the press conference. For the record, Barra is singing a song from taiwanese star, Wu Bai.
