MediaTek Octa Core MT6592 vs Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 : This is 2014 !

MediaTek presented its "True Octa Core" back in July and now, it is nearing its launch with several manufacturers set to release devices in the coming hours/days : ZOPO ZP998 (November, 21st), Coolpad Grand View 4 (November, 20th), Mlais MX69 Pro (November, 20th), Green Orange NX (November, 21st).

A few hours ago, MediaTek finally gave us the final specs of the upcoming MT6592 and earlier today, Qualcomm presented the Snapdragon 805 which will be coming next year.
The SoC would be the first True Octa Core enable to activate the 8 cores at the same time. It is based on eight 28 nm Cortex A7 core up to 2 GHz. Sticking to Cortex A7 should allow the SoC to keep in check power consumption. Like Qualcomm, MediaTek finally addresses its slow GPU boosting it with the 4 Core Mali-450MP4 supposedly running at 700 MHz. It should also be able to use LPDDR2 at 533 MHz or even LPDDR3 at 666 MHz.
The new GPU allows 4K HD video playback and supports cameras up to 16 MP filming in 1080p. The SoC comes natively with its own WiFi and GPS chips alongside FM capability.

Early leaked scores claim to be as high as 32 000 on Antutu. We expect the performances to match those of the Snapdragon S600 which are already very high and still equips premium flagships such as the OPPO N1, the HTC One Max, the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the Xiaomi Mi2S.
A good surprise would that the SoC goes beyond that and we urge you to not trust those early results.

Qualcomm should reign again on the top end market while it would hard to resist to the rise of MediaTek in the mid end market and could lose the top spot as the number one chip maker despite the Snapdragon 400 which equips the Motorola Moto G but performance wise, it only matches the one year old S4 Pro.

But this is about the Snapdragon 805, the next evolution of the Snapdragon S800, the most powerful chip there is. The new SoC comes with the brand new Adreno 420 GPU. According to Qualcomm, it is 40% more powerful than the actual Adreno 330 which can already record videos up to 4K FHD resolution.

The Snapdragon core evolves too into the new Krait 450 running at 2.5 GHz and can use the memory bandwidth up to 25.6 GB/s. Though, this is still a 32 bit core, so the 64 bit core should come later in 2014. All that power should also serves the camera allowing it to take faster and clearer photos with the gyroscope sensor.

The new modem is named Gobi 9x35 produced on a 20 nm process, so it is smaller and supports dual band Wi-Fi ac, LTE Category 4 and 4K video streaming.

Qualcomm is saying that it is ready to mass production, so we should see the new chip at CES in January or at the very least during the MWC in February.
